Taming 6m Ceilings: Perfecting Surround Sound Acoustics in a High-End Barn Conversion

Acoustic Stretch Fabric System
Barn conversions are celebrated for their dramatic proportions, exposed timber, and expansive open-plan layouts. However, those same architectural showpieces present a notorious challenge for high-end audio setups: excessive reverberation and harsh flutter echoes.
When the owners of a recent residential project set out to build a reference-grade home cinema and audio system beneath 6-metre vaulted ceilings, the room's native acoustics threatened to compromise their multi-thousand-pound surround sound investment.
Here is how Arthur Acoustics engineered a bespoke acoustic solution that tamed the echo without compromising the clean, minimalist interior aesthetic.

The Acoustic Challenge: Vaulted Ceilings & High SPL Audio
Large volume spaces with hard, reflective surfaces—such as polished concrete, glass, and plasterboard—create long reverberation times (\bm{RT_{60}}). In a surround sound environment, sound waves bounce repeatedly between parallel walls and high pitched ceilings before decaying.
This creates three critical acoustic issues:
Muddled Audio Separation: Surround effects merge into a harsh wall of sound, destroying spatial immersion and Dolby Atmos object tracking.
Low Dialogue Clarity: High mid-frequency reflection masks vocal channels, forcing listeners to continuously turn up the volume.
Loud Listening Fatigue: Refracted high frequencies create harsh sibilance, making high-end tweeters sound overly bright and fatiguing.
To unlock the full performance of a high-end surround system, the room required high-performance acoustic absorption installed directly at the primary ceiling reflection points.

The Solution: Seamless White Acoustic Fabric System
To treat the massive 6m high ceiling without disrupting the room's airy design, we installed the Arthur Acoustics Stretched Fabric System finished in a crisp, architectural matte white.
Key Project Highlights
Precision Sub-Frame Construction: A concealed tracking frame was mounted along the contours of the pitched 6m ceiling structure to preserve the dramatic architectural angle.
High-Density Absorptive Core: High-performance, non-combustible acoustic core insulation was layered behind the frame to target problematic mid and low-mid frequencies.
Acoustically Transparent Finish: The stretch fabric system provides a smooth, monolithic finish that looks identical to premium plastered ceilings while remaining acoustically transparent.
Integrated Services: Recessed architectural lighting and surround sound height channels were flush-integrated into the system for zero visual clutter.
