Transforming a Noisy Loft into a Peaceful Sanctuary: A Road Noise Case Study
Loft conversions are an excellent way to add space and value to your home. However, because they are positioned directly beneath the roof structure, they are highly vulnerable to external noise pollution. We recently took on a project where a homeowner’s newly converted loft room was being ruined by the relentless drone of a busy nearby road.

The Problem: Why Thermal Insulation Doesn't Block Sound
When we inspected the property, the roof followed a very common modern construction method: exterior tiles, a layer of rigid Kingspan insulation, and a single layer of standard plasterboard.
While rigid foam insulation boards like Kingspan are exceptional for thermal efficiency, their closed-cell, lightweight structure makes them incredibly poor at stopping sound. In fact, lightweight rigid foam can sometimes act like a drum skin, resonating and transmitting low-frequency road noise directly into the living space. Combined with a single layer of standard plasterboard, there was simply not enough mass or decoupling to keep the traffic noise out.
The Arthur Acoustics Solution: Mass, Damping, and Decoupling
To solve the issue, we needed to replace the lightweight thermal materials with a high-mass, acoustically isolated system. Here is the step-by-step process our team used to completely soundproof the loft ceiling:
1. Stripping Back to the Framework
We began by carefully removing the existing plasterboard and rigid Kingspan insulation. This exposed the structural timber joists and rafters, giving us a clean slate to build a high-performance acoustic barrier.
2. Adding Acoustic Absorption (Rockwool)
In place of the rigid foam, we packed the voids between the rafters with high-density Rockwool insulation. Unlike rigid thermal boards, mineral wool has an open, fibrous structure. This structure traps sound waves, absorbing airborne noise and preventing it from bouncing around inside the roof cavity.
3. Decoupling the Structure (Resilient Channels)
Sound travels through solid materials via vibration. If you screw plasterboard directly to timber rafters, the vibration from traffic noise transfers right into the room. To prevent this, we installed resilient metal channels across the joists. These channels act as a mechanical break, decoupling the new ceiling from the structural frame and absorbing acoustic vibrations before they can pass through.
4. Maximising Mass and Damping (Soundblock & Green Glue)
Next, we addressed the need for mass. We installed two separate layers of high-density Soundblock plasterboard. Heavy, dense materials are essential for blocking the deep, low-frequency rumble of traffic.
To take the performance to the highest level, we applied a layer of Green Glue noiseproofing compound between the two sheets of Soundblock. Green Glue is a specialized viscoelastic damping compound that converts acoustic energy (vibrations) into microscopic amounts of heat. By sandwiching it between two dense boards, we effectively deadened the entire ceiling structure.
5. Flawless Aesthetic Finish
